Common Respiratory Disorders
Asthma
Asthma is a disorder characterized by inflammation of the small tubes, the bronchioles, of respiratory system. Asthma attacks can be triggered by dust or pollen, which cause the lining of the tubes to become swollen. The smooth muscle that surrounds the bronchioles constrict and there is reduced airflow to the lungs. Excess mousous is produced too, which can make the airways even narrower. Common symptoms include coughing and wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest pain, especially at night or in the morning. Causes are not exactly known, but most researchers think it is a combination of environmental and genetic factors. Various treatments are used, including inhalers and oral medications that can lessen symptoms of coughing and controlling inflammation.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
COPD is one of the most common respiratory problems in adults. It also involves having narrow airways that make breathing increasingly difficult. The airways narrow and can deform and collapse. It includes other disorders including chronic bronchitis or emphysema. Smoking is one of the causes of COPD. There is a significant amount of people that have COPD that are not diagnosed with it. Treatments include quitting smoking, improve lifestyle, and there are some medications that can help with symptoms as well.
